The art event “Bijelo Polje Art Spring” was established with the aim of improving, promoting, and unifying the work of painters from the Bijelo Polje area. It emerged as a continuation of the rich painting tradition started by the Lazović family in the 1770s, whose work brought artistic fame to Bijelo Polje throughout the former Yugoslavia.
The first event was held in 1994 under the name “Contemporary Painting of Bijelo Polje,” when a group of artists and art educators, with the support of the Museum, initiated a salon based on tradition but oriented toward contemporary artistic trends. Over its decades-long existence, “Art Spring” has produced a large number of local creators who have continued the authentic artistic tradition of Bijelo Polje.
The special value of the event lies in its inclusive character: each year the exhibition brings together academic painters, professors and their students, amateur artists, and painters originating from the Bijelo Polje region. In this way, the salon has contributed to the development of many painters, encouraged young talents to pursue further education, promoted established creators, and supported the opening of painting workshops, art colonies, and other forms of artistic gatherings.
Today, “Bijelo Polje Art Spring” is an indispensable cultural event in the town beneath Obrov, standing alongside manifestations such as the Ratković Poetry Evenings, the Festival of Amateur Drama, and the International Festival of Tamburitza Orchestras of Montenegro.
